Estoril
Estoril, a world-famous resort, is a true cosmopolitan centre with wonderful nightlife and all the infrastructure for a summer centre - beaches, excellent hotels, golf courses, a casino and even a motor-racing circuit. The Estoril coast is located on only 25-30 km from downtown Lisbon and the international airport.
The centre of this resort is the Park of the Estoril Casino surrounded by arcades and excellent hotels.
In the 1930s Estoril became one of Portugal's main tourist centres, and the chosen place of exile for a lot of deposed European monarchs (Juan, Count of Barcelona, Carol II of Romania and Umberto of Italy among them)。
During the Second World War the Estoril coast became a refuge for writers, politicians, artists, businessmen and many Jews persecuted by the Third Reich.
Sintra
Sintra in the Estoril hinterland is a picturesque town at the foot of the mountain range of the same name. The unique characteristics and luxuriant vegetation of Sintra led UNESCO to classify it as a World heritage site. It was even necessary to create a special category for the purpose - that of “cultural landscape” - taking into account its natural riches as well as the historic buildings in the town and mountains.
Cascais
Cascais, the neighbour seaside town enjoyed an important period of development in the 14th century, when it was a major control point for boats on their way to Lisbon.
It was, however, in the second half of the 19th century, when sea bathing became popular, that Cascais was transformed to a fashionable summer resort thank's to the fact that the king of Portugal, Dom Luís I converted the fortress in Cascais to a royal summer residence. His example was copied by the nobility and their palaces and villas are still a decoration to the centre of Cascais.
RESTAURANTS
There is a vast choice of restaurants, from basic and traditional to sophisticated and up-market. We invite you to venture outside the main tourist areas to find your own favorite spot.
